Carlton is surlier than he has been in months.

At first Juliet assumes it's just a headache, then maybe a bad day, but the mood stretches on for over a week.

She starts to worry.

Once that starts, it takes little more than a day and a half for her anxiety-laced wonderings to reach a boiling point.

He's muttering sullenly at a batch of reports when she finally bursts.

Did something happen between you and Polly?”

He glances up at her, hardly sparing that effort, and then goes back to the reports. “Like what?”

Juliet shrugs helplessly. “I don't know. A fight or a disagreement or something.”

Lassiter snorts dismissively, which is both reassuring and frustratingly unsatisfying. “No, O'Hara.”

Well, then what's the matter with you?” she demands.

Now he finally looks up at her, frowning. “What the hell are you talking about?”

She makes an incredulous noise of disbelief and throws a hand in the air. “You've been grumpy for nearly two weeks now, Carlton! All that goofy smiling and—”

Goofy smiling?”

Yeah,” she says. “Whenever you talk about her.” She waved a hand, dipping her head a little. “Or firearms.”

Lassiter seems disgruntled by this information. A moment later he has recovered, however, waving his pen dismissively. “No, O'Hara, there are no fights or anything else. Polly's just been busy. She's doing a play with the little monsters. And her sister's in town.”

Oh,” Juliet says knowingly, sinking into the chair beside his desk. “No time?”

Lassiter ignores her, muttering to the reports, “Everything will be fine when she's not so damned busy.”

Juliet watches him for a long moment and then slaps his shoulder with the back of her hand. “I feel like drinking tonight.”

Lassiter looks at her, clearly exasperated and a little bit annoyed. But he says, “Yeah, fine, I could use a drink.”

Juliet goes back to work, the tightness gone from her chest.
